Late February is a time of brisk, sunny weather in Beaufort, as camellias bloom brightly in local gardens, and an international flavor fills the air. The
Beaufort International Film Festival features more than 100 films from 24 countries from Feb. 18th through the 21st.
The beauty of Spring takes a lively center stage on the weekend of March 26th through 28th, with the 54th annual
Spring Candlelight Tour of Homes, offering fascinating glimpses of local historic dwellings, as well as and the Guild of Beaufort Galleries Spring Art Walk, featuring the work of gifted coastal artists.
April brings the ultimate in good taste to the Beaufort area, which is famed for its shrimp, crabs and fish, as well as such seafood amalgamations as Frogmore Stew.
The Soft Shell Crab Festival begins the fun in neighboring Port Royal from April 24th to May 7th. On April 30th the Pavilion in Beaufort’s Waterfront will be the scene of
Shaggin with A Taste, a good-time mix of dancing, followed by the
Taste of Beaufort May 1st throughout the park and waterfront area, highlighting the delectable offerings of nearly two dozen local restaurants.
Another Lowountry highlight event taking
place in Beaufort is the
Beaufort Twilight Run. The event takes place in March and is
a runners delight.
Late Spring offers plenty of culture and color for those visiting Beaufort. The
24th annual Gullah Festival showcases the arts, music and dialects of the descendants of West Africans, while the Garden a Day festival features studies of outstanding local gardens from June 7th through 11th.
Summertime events are Beaufort’s most spectacular, with waterfront fireworks displays on the 4th of July, and most highly-anticipated, the annual
Beaufort Water Festival. This popular family attraction held along the Waterfront Park area overlooking the Beaufort River will take place for the 55th year in 2010, extending from July 9th through July 18th. Along with an array of high-speed boat races, there are aerobatic displays, and twilight dances. Family-friendly competitions include the hilarious bed race, as well as croquet, badminton and horse shoe tournaments.
As clear cool days and nights of Fall offer more delights beginning with the annual
Beaufort Shrimp Festival Oct. 1st and 2nd. Next door in Port Royal, German beer flows and brass bands play at the Port Royal Oktoberfest on Oct. 16th. Local artistry, architecture and nature are highlighted again on the weekend of Oct. 22nd through 24th with the
Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens and another installment of the
Guild of Beaufort Galleries Art Walk.
The unique heritage of the traditional sea island communities is featured in the
Heritage Days Celebration on nearby St. Helena Island, Nov. 11th through 13th, hosted at the Penn Center, a National Landmark as school and cultural center for descendants of slaves.
A year of enjoyable events culminates on the weekend of Dec. 3rd through 5th, with Beaufort’s holiday
Night on the Town, Light Up the Night boat parade and Christmas Parade.
